MSW Student Resources

Welcome to the Office of Student Services page, your resource hub for Master of Social Work (MSW) students.  Here you’ll find valuable information, tools, and support to enhance your academic journey and professional development.

Student Handbooks

The Student Handbook is an essential guide to the policies and procedures of the School of Social Work. It provides students with the information they need to successfully navigate their academic journey. All students are expected to familiarize themselves with and adhere to the policies outlined in the handbook. We strongly recommend keeping this resource accessible throughout your time at Howard University.

Plans of Study

All students are expected to follow their designated Plan of Study. Any course registration outside of the approved plan must be approved in advance by your academic adviser.

Students in the School of Social Work are classified into two categories: Advanced Standing and Traditional.

  • Advanced Standing Students are admitted based on their undergraduate academic preparation, as determined during the admissions process.
  • Traditional Students follow the standard curriculum pathway.

All students will also choose a concentration in either Direct Practice (Micro) or Community, Administration, and Policy (CAP) Practice. Descriptions of each concentration, along with complete program requirements, are available in the Student Handbook.

Licensing and Professional Development

Licensure requirements for social work vary by state. It is important to review the specific requirements for the state in which you plan to practice.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) provides a helpful resource that outlines state-by-state licensure requirements. We encourage you to use this tool to ensure you meet the necessary qualifications.

To assist with common questions, we’ve developed a Social Work Licensing FAQs document. However, please note that your state’s social work licensing board is the final authority on licensure. Be sure to consult their guidelines to confirm you are meeting all necessary criteria.
